Abraham Lincoln, our sixteenth President, when on March 4, 1861, gave his First Inaugural Address on the steps of the United States Capitol, the same steps that were violated on January 6, 2021, his message of unity was clear.

That message, now 163 years later, was remarkably prescient since our country once again is against itself.

He too inherited a mess when he took office, his predecessor, James Buchanan leaving him with a very dirty House to clean up the best he could, the same way Joseph Biden to the best of his ability tried to do.

We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.

                         We can only hope.
