Did You Know…How They Loved Their Pets Edition

U.S. President Lyndon Baines Johnson loved his Beagle so much, he gave him his own initials, naming him…

 Little Beagle Johnson.

Elizabeth Taylor never traveled without, Sugar, her Maltese Terrier. Whenever visiting England, she’d always stay on a boat rather than at a hotel to avoid their strict quarantine laws.

When Julia Child and her husband Paul moved to France in 1948, as they disembarked the ocean liner SS America in Le Havre, en route to Paris, they weren’t alone.

Minette, their faithful cat never dreaming of leaving her behind, did too.

The writer Mark Twain loved cats and had 19 at one time. In his autobiography he wrote of…

cat parades and baskets of kittens in the hall with names like Buffalo Bill, Soapy Sal, Sour Mash and Tammany.

The actress, writer Carrie Fisher never went anywhere without her French Bulldog, Gary, who’d even sit on stage with her during readings.

When Bobby Kennedy was Attorney General in his brother’s administration, he brought his Newfoundland, Brumus, to work everyday despite disapproval from some of his peers.

Years later, while campaigning for the 1968 Presidential Nomination, his loyal Cocker Spaniel, Freckles, never left his side.  At his funeral, his kids wrapped a black armband around Freckles’s waist to honor his beloved master.

   But here’s my favorite.

When you visit Gettysburg National Park, along with reverent monuments to Generals George Meade, Robert E. Lee, Winfield Hancock, James Longstreet among others, you’ll come across one of Bull Terrier Sallie Ann Jarrett, the loyal mascot of the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry heroically killed in battle.

As you can see, people leave Sallie biscuits letting her know, they were there.  🙂
