On the eve of Audrey Hepburn becoming a household name in 1953, her first film, Roman Holiday about to open, she appeared at the atelier of French designer Hubert de Givenchy hoping he’d dress her for her next movie.

Very busy, and disappointed thinking it was Katharine Hepburn coming to call, looked at this doe-eyed waif, pointed to a rack and said...see what’s there, before dismissing her.

Fast forward…

the clothes Audrey wore in Sabrina (1954), were all beautifully made by Monsieur de Givenchy, becoming her personal designer thereafter, and dear friend for the next 40 years.

When she passed away at 63 of cancer in 1993, he stopped designing not long after, saying

…it is time…my muse, she is no more.

Hubert de Givenchy died in 2018 at age 91.

When John F. Kennedy Jr.’s plane went missing in July 1999, President William Clinton to much criticism, pulling out all the stops to find John, his wife Carolyn and sister-in-law, Lauren, included calling out the U.S. Navy Coast Guard.

When in most cases, the search would have been exhausted, Coast Guard Rear Admiral Richard Larrabbe said to President Clinton…

‘I think we have a chance to find something else because of the equipment we have here, even though it’s difficult, and I’m inclined to believe because of who’s involved that we ought to go on a little more.’

And I quote…when rescue of a lost flier and his passengers turned into the recovery of a president’s son it left the realm of the ordinary.

“If anyone believes that was wrong, the Coast Guard is not at fault,” said Clinton, “I am. It was because I thought it was the right thing to do under the circumstances.”

I’m no fan of Bill’s, but when he stood up that day at a specially called press conference saying…you can blame me…he grew tender in my eyes.

In 2016, when a Golden Retriever named, Bretagne, pronounced Brittany,  the last surviving rescue dog who tirelessly searched for survivors after the September 11 attacks, about to be put down at age 16 due to kidney failure, representatives from the Texas Task Force and the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department and other agencies stood at attention and saluted Bretagne, as she entered the veterinary office on that Monday afternoon.

They saluted Bretagne again as she departed the animal hospital with her body draped in an American Flag.

“Just because she’s a K9 doesn’t make her any less part of our department than any other member,” said one of her peers.
