Wrapping it Up

I don’t normally blog on the weekends but feel the need to considering what the week has been.

Most of Manhattan, I’m happy to say, will have restored power as of tonight. The outer boroughs still have to wait a little longer but Con Edison, who’s been working around the clock, has done a remarkable job.

A woman mentioned Thomas Edison to me when I met her on the street. She said we need to celebrate him more, especially right now. Certainly food for thought for a history hysteric like myself. Since he died in 1931 he’s not exactly a main-streamer but she was right, he certainly was present during this hellish hurricane induced black-out.

The New York City Marathon was cancelled yesterday, a great surprise to me. The New York Post ran a very stirring photograph of two massive generators positioned in Central Park to warm the runners. The headline read: Abuse of Power since there were and are so many people still without electricity. It made me take serious pause.  I gather the Mayor did too because lo and behold, it’s off. I think after careful thought it was the right thing to do. Manhattan on a normal day becomes circus like during Marathon weekend. I remember blogging a plethora of complains last year because I couldn’t comfortably run in the park. I have to say I’m glad it’s cancelled.

My guilt has flared up like a sudden case of hives. I feel I could have done more to help others but stayed home nice and snug to read and write.

I feel the need to come clean over what others are called a staycation. With the exception of a few calls along with texting asking people if they were okay, I have virtually done nothing on a greater scale.

I did pray. I actually went to 7 a.m. mass every morning so I guess there’s that, but like I wrote my friend Ed, my altruism seems to be at large. It’s so unlike me too, so I hope it’s just lost in the crowd somewhere because this feeling of selfishness may very well consume me.

I want to thank everyone who wrote to me during the week asking after my welfare. I feel as though I know each and every one of you on a very intimate level which once again proves the power and impact of the internet.

My graces to you all.

Susannah

PS…I did lose a job because of the storm so that make me feel a little less badly about myself. Catholicism, like a tattoo across my conscience.
