Clik here to view. I made the mistake of rereading Peggy Noonan’s book, The Case Against Hillary Clinton, written in 2000, when she was about to run for the New York Senate.
Beautifully penned, but unmistakably a first-class Hillary basher, beginning with calling her a carpetbagger for not being a true New Yorker. Of course, neither was Bobby Kennedy when he ran, someone I deeply revere, so I couldn’t have held that against her.
What it did bring up, naturally, is the up and coming November presidential election right around the corner.
I started to muse about the last one in 2008, our two candidates, John McCain and Barack Obama, worthy opponents not to mention pretty awe-inspiring each in their own right.
First we had this articulate, African American man who blew the doors off the place with his surprise eloquence. The Great Black Hope, if you will, made you want to genuflect and resurrect Abraham Lincoln.
His rival was Senator John McCain of Arizona, a man whose war record for me, makes him the quintessential American. I can never read about it without tearing up, how after being tortured and finally allowed to go home, refusing to leave his men.
These were our choices in 2008, and a hard one to make. I remember entering the voting booth now all personally penned, no more lever to pull, in my little black suit I always wear given the privilege to vote…pausing, unsure even in the 11th hour, who would be the best to lead.
No one knew then Obama would flatline, and of course when Mr. McCain picked Miss Alaska as a running mate, it dropped his sanity a quart, but still…inspiration on both sides stared at you from the podium, alas, something, in my opinion, we don’t have today.
I feel okay saying, though a registered Democrat, I voted for McCain, because even with that loon at his side who at his advanced age, could have very easily been president, he made me feel safer, something I certainly don’t feel now.
Will Trump and Hillary surprise us, but in a more positive way than Obama did? Will he become a Jefferson with better hair and she, suddenly ethically honest and trustworthy?
Who’s to say?
What I do know, come November it will still be a privilege to go make a choice regardless how hard or empty it may be.
And as always….
GOD BLESS AMERICA.
