With Malice Toward None

Lincoln’s prophetic words from his Second Inaugural Address, sweep across me….with malice toward none, with charity for all…

I also keep thinking of what’s on a one dollar bill…E Pluribus Unum, Latin for…

 Out of Many, One.

Tuesday’s Presidential Debate spoke to me in many ways. Without any disparaging remarks that only perpetuate more harm, I so wish the country would open its eyes to see how it’s hemorrhaging in its division.

Yes, it’s disturbingly divided, and for all the wrong reasons. Greed has replaced charity for all, leaving humanity in its wake.

I see it first hand where I live.

With the exception of the very few, most residents are extremely wealthy. They park their expensive cars in the over-priced parking garage, while doormen, without as much as gleaning a nod, carry their bags and packages as though they were royalty.

It’s entitlement without apology. Is it just a coincidence they’re all Trumpers?

They have no use for someone like me, since I’m not of their ilk my kind nature seeming to irritate them.

It’s greed and the humble in their not so neutral corners, me in their eyes, the weakest.

But be that as it may…

At least I’m aware of what’s around me, sharing what I have.

Does this make me a saint? Hardly, but it does make me a conscious soul living in the greatest country in the world despite its present shortcomings.

I’d be remiss not mentioning yesterday was September 11, the 23rd Anniversary of the Terrorist Attacks when the country did pull together.

And it does feel like yesterday. I was here.

We need to do that again.

We need to Bind Up the Nation’s Wounds, another Lincoln appeal from the same address.

I urge all my fellow Americans to take out a dollar bill and read what it says.

I’ll quote another poignant Inaugural Address…

…ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.

John F. Kennedy  January 20, 1961

So I ask you, what’s it going to take to put down our swords?

For me, the only thing left might be prayer.
