Heart Felt

Read a great quote by Daniel Patrick Moynihan longtime senator of New York (1977-2001) pre-Hillary.

“To be Irish, is to know that in the end the world will break your heart.”

This was right on the heels of Carmela leaving my life as well as learning of the passing of a friend.

I think you don’t necessarily have to be Irish to have this sentiment.  Italians, Jews, Greeks, Latinos…we are all such passionate people with hearts that, no matter how hard we try, won’t stay shut.

So much concerns me these days.  Big things like oil spills, and small ones like the kid next store coming home after school to an empty house.  He’s 9 and his single mom needs to work, but still, wouldn’t it be great if she were there waiting in the doorway?

Seals coated with petroleum while rescue workers try valiantly to help them.  Polar bears clinging to ice barely holding on.  I keep getting postings about the animals in Nepal after the earthquake.  How does one go about making a difference while our planet systematically implodes?

A woman I know named Diane who heads DAWGS, an animal rescue in Dawn, Texas says, you save them one at a time.

My friend Jennifer Panton who leads the United Action for Animals claims, there’s no time to save them one at a time.

What about a little boy climbing those stairs around 3 every day, his backpack filled with books and questions with hopefully at least a snack waiting on the kitchen counter.

Where does the difference, as small as it may be, count, when the world ultimately breaks your heart?

Forgive me when I say, I really don’t know.
