How Did This Happen?

As of late, there’s a teenage boy sitting at the entrance of the 86th Street subway on the downtown side.

He doesn’t ask for anything, even in this oppressive heat.

There’s no verbal hustle whatsoever, just a plastic cup with a long slit, his change spilling out, sitting beside him like his one and only friend.

He’s a beautiful kid with mocha skin, harboring fear through eyes similar to a scared deer’s.

Twice now I’ve stopped to give him Kleenex asking him to please mop his face.

He obeys very quickly like a child would.

I asked my friend Lisa (lifewiththetopdown.com) how could this be; what happened to this boy?

She said, he was probably in foster care and when turned 18, was let loose even though he may not have had a secure place to go to.

  This broke both our hearts.

Couldn’t help thinking of Roe Vs Wade since, this boy was probably the result of a baby having a baby; a girl without sufficient knowledge of birth control, the next thing the courts are trying to overturn.

My ire ignited thinking, it’s so simple to say it’s wrong to be pro-abortion.

 For starters…

NO ONE IS IN FAVOR OF ABORTION. WHAT WE ARE IN FAVOR OF, OR SHOULD BE, IS MORE AVID EDUCATION.

But It’s wrong to make it easy for teens to copulate.

That was actually written by someone whose humanity took a serious hike.

They’re just kids after all, searching for the affection they never rightfully received, resulting in a bewildered, unwanted pregnancy.

The Christian Right, by the way, is often very wrong.

  You know what’s right?

Kindness, compassion and understanding without pause.

As I’m about to leave, a young girl comes with a box of Fig Newtons and a big bottle of Poland Spring.

I tear up as the kid breaks into a grateful grin.
